The entire supply chain, from the farm to the skin processor, is under control. Ecology begins on the farm, continues through transportation, and also involves the activities that process both meat and skin.
The Leather Working Group has certified many skin processors.
Each processor must register with the Ministry of Primary Industries (MPI).
For each individual processing plant, MPI registration is mandatory.
Upcycling: Skins and hides are leftovers from the meat business. None of the animals that are killed in New Zealand are grown or killed for their hides or skins. The raw material would be thrown in the landfill if it weren't processed into leather.
REACH’s main motive is to enhance the protection of human health and the environment through earlier and quicker identification of the properties of chemical substances. The four REACH processes are: registration, evaluation, authorization, and limitation of chemicals.
For skin processors, LWG certification is required.
